5 reasons why Whisper app is awesome!

Whisper is considered as the anonymous social media where users post their most vulnerable and funny secrets. It is especially popular with the younger population who have chosen Whisper as the social media of choice. At the time of this writing, the app has 30 million monthly active users and its momentum is still growing. Whisper was founded by Michael Heyward and Brad Books. Since the beginning they have decided to focus their efforts on user engagement strategies rather than user acquisition. The consequences of that decision propelled the user base to grow slowly but actively. The engagement feed onto itself until it grows into millions of active users. Here are 5 reasons why Whisper is engaging:

1.    Humans love secrets and gossip: Why do we like secrets and gossip? It seem odd that evolution demanded us to care about other people’s problems. There is a perfectly good reason for that. In the times of hunter gatherer societies, secrets are the currency of influence and power. Those who know the most secrets are popular because everyone in the tribe come to learn about each other’s secrets from them. In the modern times especially in politics, secrets still hold a certain influence. Whisper makes sure that the presentation of secrets is as visually enticing as possible. When you posts a secret the app reads the words and automatically suggests related images to be used in the background. It’s quick and easy. Sometimes a scandalous secret becomes more humorous because of the image in the background. There is also a soft cap of words due to the card system. Since secrets with few words look bigger, it is engaged more often than longer ones. So users tend to write less with more impact.

2.    You can find anything if you are curious enough: Every folly of humanity can be found on Whisper. There are billions of secrets available since the app was launched four years ago. The developers package them in ‘categories’ and ‘stories of the day’ so the users can look at them if they wish. You can sink in hours into the app due to the entertainment of finding never ending secrets. Plus it is also quite educational.

3.    A supportive community: As far as anonymous networks go, Whisper has one of the better ones on the internet. Users console and sympathize with each other especially in heartbreaking secrets. There are hate replies here and there but most of them are positive. This is because the community is vigilant of each other’s feelings.

4.    Making friends: There is a private messaging feature on each card. You can chat directly with the person who posted the secret in order to help him/her or extend the conversation beyond the secret itself. Hearts and replies are nice but the real connections happen in these private chats. If both parties agree, they can reveal their identity and may become friends in real life. Although it rarely happens, when it does it is fantastic.

5.    Feeling connected to humanity: The incredible thing about the human brain is that although you may have never heard of a particular secret, you understand what the person is feeling when it happened. This mutual understanding of each other feelings provide a bigger picture of why Whisper succeeds. Compare to some of the bizarre secrets I have read, mine feel quite normal, funny enough. The overall experience is comforting. The more I use Whisper, the more I understand that we are all trying to live in this crazy world. Sometimes bad things happen. Some are embarrassing, some are funny, and some are tragic. You know, what? It is OK. In the end, these experiences are what makes us normal human beings.
